  • What is your approach to dog training?
I don't label my training methods. It's nothing more than calm and clear communication that all dogs understand. Getting the owner to understand their dog, and help them to understand how to get their dog to want to listen to them and be trained by them, rather than demanding it of their dog. Clear communication is all your dog wants. My whole foundation to dog training is training your dog to be calm and focused on the owner... then training the rest of the tricks are easy!
  • Is my dog too old to be trained?
Absolutely not. A dog is a dog no matter what age, breed, gender or if it's been de-sexed or not. They can all bark, jump, poo, bite, pull on a lead, react on a lead, dig, scratch, yawn, wag their tail etc. regardless of their age. The issues always stem from the dog not understanding what it's supposed to do, so it defaults into doing dogs things... and these are usually what we don't like.
  • Do I need to buy a pool noodle to train my dog?
I genuinely get asked this too often... No, you do not need a pool noodle. A pool noodle is what my son plays with at his swimming lessons. You also don't need a rake, or broom or any other long stick type thing. (Having said this, very experienced dog trainers do use sticks as "markers" or "lead" sticks in a positive way without any force or hitting. You don't need to for your pet dog though!)
  • Where do you do your dog training sessions?
All in person dog training sessions are held in your home or at a location designated by you. We generally like to hold the first session in your home as most dog behavioural problems start there. All our classes are held in Herne Hill, Geelong.
  • What areas do you service for dog training?
We currently service the Greater Geelong Region, including the Bellarine and Surf Coast. If you are from outside this area we do hold virtual (online) session. More information can be found here:
  • How do I book a dog training session with you?
You can book your training session online via our website. Simply select the package you'd like and you will then be directed to a calendar where you can select a date and time that suits you. If you can't find a time that suits feel free to call or email us and we'll see what we can work out for you.
  • Do I need to pay for the dog training up front?
Yes - we take full payment for training on booking.
  • What if your dog training doesn't work?
We take pride in providing you with high quality training that will work for you and your dog. If you are not completely satisfied with the training provided and disagree with the method, we will provide you with a full refund. This is the reason I ask for payment up front. Since I started asking for payment, the success rate of my clients and their training sky rocketed! This is because I worked out that asking for payment up front made the owner genuinely COMMIT to the training more than just saying they'll do it. It has also made cancellations almost non existent because people not only want to train their dog... but they've literally invested in it! As with all training you will only get out of it what you are willing to put in. We will provide you with the tools and techniques to assist you with your training but it will require consistency and repetition from you for you and your dog to get the full value. Please be committed to your dog as much as I will be. Trust me, I care more about your dog than I do you hahaha! Dogs are the best!
  • Why is my dog crazy?
Generally it's human to dog communication and miscommunication that drives crazy behaviour. Our training can help you understand these communication errors and help you to change them so you and your dog better understand each other.
  • Are dog parks and doggy day care good for my dog?
There are endless opinions on this, some good some bad, so I suggest you use your own best judgement. They really work and are great for some people, and they really don't and cause issues for others. Do what you think is right for you and your dog. FYI - My dogs have never been to a dog park and never will.
  • What is the best harness, collar or lead for my dog?
The harness, collar or lead is not important. What is important is the human attached to the dog! Being able to have your dog focused and engaged with you is so important. Good calm and fun dog training is the key! Most clients I work with own 2 or 3 harnesses, a collar, a halti and a slip lead... and still have a crazy dog on the lead when in public!
  • How do I toilet train my dog?
Toilet training a dog involves taking them outside frequently, especially after meals, playtime, and naps. Choose a designated spot outside for them to do their business, use positive reinforcement when they successfully go outside, and limit their access to areas inside where accidents may occur.
  • How do I stop my dog from jumping on people?
Teach your dog the "off" command, and use it consistently whenever they jump. Avoid giving your dog attention or affection when they jump, as this will reinforce the behaviour. Instead, reward them for calm behaviour and sitting politely.
  • How do I socialise my dog?
Expose your dog to a variety of different people, places, and animals in a controlled and positive manner. Use reward-based training methods to reinforce calm behaviour, and gradually increase the level of exposure as your dog becomes more comfortable. You may also find our socialisation classes helpful with this.
  • How do I stop my dog from barking?
Identify the triggers for your dog's barking behaviour, and work to desensitise them to these triggers using positive reinforcement techniques. Provide your dog with plenty of physical and mental stimulation and avoid reinforcing the barking behaviour by giving your dog attention when they bark.
  • How do I crate train my dog?
Introduce your dog to the crate gradually, using positive reinforcement techniques and providing plenty of treats and toys. Make the crate a comfortable and inviting space for your dog, and never use it as a form of punishment. You need to do many many many short stints with the dog in the crate. You cannot just lock them in and leave and expect the dog to cope.
  • How do I train my dog to walk on a lead?
Start by teaching your dog to wear a collar or harness, and then gradually introduce them to the lead. Use positive reinforcement techniques to encourage your dog to walk calmly on the lead and avoid pulling or jerking as this can be painful and reinforce negative behaviours.
  • How do I train my dog not to be aggressive towards other dogs?
Identify the triggers for your dog's aggression, and work to desensitise them to these triggers using positive reinforcement techniques. Keep your dog on a lead in public spaces, and avoid allowing them to interact with other dogs until they have mastered basic obedience commands.
  • How do I train my dog to come when called?
Use positive reinforcement techniques to encourage your dog to come when called, and avoid using negative reinforcement like punishment or scolding. Start by practicing in a controlled environment, and gradually increase the level of distraction as your dog becomes more comfortable and confident. Our recall classes are designed to assist you with this.
